Facilities

In the temporary medical school building, there are a number of classrooms and other facilities necessary for student learning, including an interactive learning center, research laboratory, library, and simulation facility. These facilities will also be available in the new medical school building when it is completed in 2020.


Interactive Learning Center

All laboratory-based learning and educational activities will be held in the Interactive Learning Center (ILC). The ILC represents a “hybrid” design for hands-on learning of anatomy, histology, radiographic and ultrasonographic imaging, pathology, physiology, immunology, and microbiology. In the temporary medical school building, the ILC has a capacity for 90 students, and arranges dissecting tables alongside collaboration tables so that multidisciplinary laboratory sessions run side-by-side. All tables are equipped with touchscreen monitors for access to online applications and resources for guided and self-directed laboratory sessions. Associated with the ILC, there are several large-specimen storage units within the learning center, a storage room and an office for a facility manager. In the new medical school building in Colton, the ILC will have a capacity for 120 students.


Research

A fully-equipped modular laboratory with 3290 sq. ft. of space will facilitate collaborative basic science research. For clinical and translational research, Arrowhead Regional Medical Center (ARMC) currently supports clinical trials funded by pharmaceutical companies and/or biotechnology companies that involve clinicians within the hospital who will have faculty appointments in the medical school. There will be collaborative research work between clinical and basic science faculty at CUSM-SOM (CalMed) and ARMC, and both entities provide regulatory support for the conduct of clinical research. Students and faculty will be able to join basic and clinical research projects. In the new medical school building in Colton, the research lab will have 7400 sq. ft. of space.


Simulation

Facilities for training and assessment of clinical skills will be similar in the temporary and the new medical school buildings. There are 15 patient-examination rooms (simulating physician’s office with examination rooms) for students to learn history-taking and physical examination skills, conduct standardized patient examination, and perform Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCEs). These examination rooms have at least 120 sq. ft. capacity and contain an examination table, angled lamp stand, sink, physician chair, patient’s chair, mounted ophthalmoscope and otoscope, and a computer cart.

Simulation equipment includes various mannequins, including task trainers (e.g. airway management, phlebotomy, and digital rectal examination trainers) and high-fidelity computer-based simulation manikins (e.g. the SimMan for normal and abnormal breath and heart sounds). A control room for simulation is fully equipped to set mannequin conditions.

The examination and simulation rooms have audio and video (AV) connectivity that allows all interactions with the simulation mannequins and the standardized patients to be viewed (and recorded in a central repository) from a remote central control unit with a two-way communication capability for student training and assessment.


Library

The university library is centrally located in the CUSM education building offering individual and group study areas. Wireless connectivity, computer workstations, individual and group seating, printer, and whiteboard are provided. CUSM students, faculty, and associates have onsite and remote access to digital library resources 24/7 including: AccessMedicine, JAMA, the Cochrane Collection, UpToDate, MEDLINE, Science Direct, SCOPUS, along with ebook, journal, and Ready Reference collections. Professional library staff assist individuals with their medical research needs. Services include, but are not limited to: 24/7/365 Ask A Librarian chat service, research assistance and subject guide advisory, in-depth research consultations (by appointment), and interlibrary loan through various partnerships.

CUSM students and faculty also have access to the Arrowhead Regional Medical Center (ARMC) Library located on the first floor of the ARMC building. The ARMC library provides wireless connectivity, a copying machine, printers, and a variety of seating options. Professional library staff provide reference services and assistance in utilizing the print and electronic resource collections.

Both libraries are active members of the National Network of Libraries of Medicine.


Classrooms and College Rooms

Many of the small group learning activities take place in a variety of learning spaces - a 60-seat classroom, a 90-seat classroom, and 9 college rooms. In each of these rooms, the small group learning environment for student teams is preserved: 5 students seat around each collaboration table. There is capacity for 12 tables in the 60-seat classroom and for 18 tables in the 90-seat classroom. Each college room has a capacity for 10 students (2 teams of 5). Each collaboration table has an associated display monitor for the student team and all rooms are equipped with facilities for projection to large displays.
