Dr. DeFriez started his medical career working in a Health Manpower Shortage Area (HMSA) for the U.S. Public Health Service. Following those three years of general practice, he finished residency training and worked for many years as a Board-certified Anesthesiologist, Pain Management specialist, and Hospice Medical Director. In 2008, he completed a Master's degree in the University of Utah's Clinical Scholar program and has transitioned to full-time medical education.

Dr. DeFriez is a recognized expert in test development. He is the recipient of the President's Medal of the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society for his work in developing an online national standardized test that is used in many colleges and universities across the country. He is published in diverse subjects, including anatomy training, the pathophysiology of pain, and the categories and uses of major pharmaceuticals. Overarching all of his academic pursuits is a passion for advancing innovative teaching techniques that better serve the modern student. In support of those interests he has become a strong advocate for the "flipped classroom" style that is the hallmark of the CUSM learning pedagogy.
