Position Purpose

To teach and direct a 3-credit research course and the Capstone Project in Statistics and Epidemiology in the Master of Biomedical Science program (MBS). The Capstone project requires the student to synthesize and integrate knowledge acquired in the MBS coursework and other learning experiences to a project involving actual data analysis.

Information provided below is a general description of responsibilities; it is not intended to provide an all-inclusive list of responsibilities and may change depending on the needs of CUSM.

The course director will challenge the students to reflect and integrate their training and experiences with the goal of developing their own critical thinking skills. During the project, students should engage in the entire process of problem solving and data analysis from collecting and processing actual data while applying suitable and appropriate analytic methods. The course director may choose topics from industry, government, non-governmental organizations, health systems, or academic research. The projects may include (but not limited) to report, research paper, and grant proposal.

Course goals

  • Guide the students to provide a clear idea of the domain and topic under investigation
  • Identify gaps in the knowledge pertaining to the specific discipline of interest
  • Formulate research question, develop a hypothesis, problem definition, and delivery (or propose) a solution
  • Analyze the data (quantitative, qualitative, or mixed methods)
  • Develop teamwork and collaborations skills
  • Create a project work breakdown and milestone schedule to be achieved during the project
  • Present material by delivering a manuscript and/or a presentation
  • Prepare and complete a Capstone project

Minimum Requirements

  • Master’s Degree in a related field
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, high motivation, and ability to work independently.
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse groups of students, staff, and faculty.
  • Ability to analyze situations, utilize effective judgment, logically reach solutions, and effectively handle and resolve challenges.
  • Collegiality to maintain healthy work environment with peers while sharing and receiving collegial advice.
  • Proficiency in education-related software and teaching technology as well as utilizing word processing, spreadsheets, databases, and graphics.
  • Successful candidates must be committed to quality graduate education with a demonstrated ability for excellence in teaching.
